May 2015 All Things Birds Contest..winners Announced

Many male hummingbirds do dramatic aerial displays to attract a mate. After mating the female does all the work from incubating the eggs, to feeding the young. Because females are not as bright as the male it is harder for predators to see them as they sit on their nests. The greenish back of North American hummingbird females also helps them blend in.

The females build nests that are well camouflaged to blend in well with surroundings. The 1/2 inch eggs will incubate for about 15 days.

The peregrine falcon is the fastest bird on record reaching horizontal cruising speeds of 65-90 kph ( 40-55 mph) and not exceeding speeds of 105-110 kph (65-68 mph). When swooping, the peregrine flies at much greater speeds, however, varying from 160-440 kmh (99-273 mph)!

one morning i was about to run out the door for work and did a double take in the kitchen because i saw some feathers on the ground, closer look, and my sisters dog had a dead bird in his mouth like it was one of his toys-he must have caught it when he went to pee and brought it back and put it in his bed...needless to say-boy that was one DISGUSTING feathery bloody mess....he was proud of it though!
