National Wildlife Refuge

Elevation: -228 feet
Land Area: 1,800 acres (35,800 additional acres lie underwater)
Established: 1930 (dedicated to Sonny Bono in 1998)

With the loss of a majority of California's wetlands to rapid urban development, the Salton Sea has become critical to the survival of millions of migrating birds as a stopover along the Pacific Flyway. The refuge provides habitat for over 375 bird species for many as a critical wintering or migration stopover area.
Some 2.5 million wintering geese, ducks, and grebes, including support for 90% of the North American population of the eared grebe, 80% of the white pelicans, 45% of the endangered Yuma clapper rail, along with significant populations of brown pelicans, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and even tropical marine birds in summer.

A significant Yuma clapper rail population nests on the refuge. Sensitive species using the refuge include the fulvous whistling-duck, wood stork, long-billed curlew, mountain plover, western snowy plover, burrowing owl, and white-faced ibis.
